Heather Slingerland is an editorial and fine art photographer with over a decade of experience. Her work explores the stories of women and the complexities of femininity, often through intimate, character-driven narratives.
She was awarded an artist-in-residence from Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA in 2024. In 2022 she published her first book, Love Sex COVID, chronicling her dating experiences during COVID. She was awarded a Coronavirus Storytelling Grant by Oklahoma Watch, along with Inasmuch Foundation and the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame, for her series on Cherokee women in Northeastern Oklahoma navigating the COVID pandemic. Her previous projects include a series on 50 mothers in their homes around New York City and a series about women and their relationship to their hair.
At the heart of Heather’s work is a desire to preserve emotion, memory, and connection. Whether photographing strangers or collaborators she’s known for years, she brings a sense of trust, curiosity, and a refreshing perspective to each image. Her photographs often live in the in-between — the personal and the political, the everyday and the surreal — inviting viewers to slow down and really look.
